August 31st 10:30 - Olympus, Fader, and Vanta

Another day filled with Humpbacks! During our tours this morning we encountered 3 beautiful giants. Olympus, our 3 year old juvenile female Humpback, was playing in the waters on this day. Feeding and rolling around the waves. She even pooped at our boat and gave us some very close passes!

Olympus today was playing with a stick, just like a dog! She was rolling around and pushing a large tree branch with her nose. Humpbacks are very smart and curious animals, and we often see them playing with kelp and carrying it on their noses, but we’ve never seen one playing with a tree branch before.

We also came across Fader and Vanta who were traveling quickly past the South of Gabriola Island. This duo was surfacing very fast side-by-side. This is a pairing we have not observed before. Maybe these two are cousins, or siblings, or maybe they are just friends!
