May 29th - Orcas at Yellowpoint and off of Entrance

May 29th was another beautiful day on the water. We started our journey by heading South in search of whales near Five Finger Island. This area has been popular with the Humpback whales in the past couple of weeks. It is possible there is a large amount of krill or a small species of fish in the waters of this area, leading to more individuals coming to feast.

As we began our trip we were informed of a sighting of Orca near Yellowpoint. We turned around and headed towards this sighting. One of our open vessels, Cascadia, spotted the pod travelling near the coastline. These orca were ID’d as the T37’s plus one additional friend. This pod consists of 4 members: The matriarch Rocky III (T037), her daughter Harald (T037B), and Harald’s two children Lance (T037B1) and T037B2.

After watching this pod travelling towards Dodd Narrows, our boats headed out in search of other wildlife to observe. We headed out through Gabriola Passage and into the Strait of Georgia. Our boats spread out in the search for a Humpback - unfortunately we were unable to locate one today. However, on the way back towards the harbour, Keta and Kula located more orca. These orca were ID’d as the T100’s and the T46B’s. These two pods were making a dash towards Entrance Island. Entrance Island is a popular haul out spot for our Stellar Sealions, California Sealions, and our Harbour Seals. In other words, this is a orca buffet location!
