May 28th - Slate & calf off of Galiano Island

We were blessed with awesome weather when we left our dock in search of whales on May 28th. We located Slate and her calf diving side by side along the coast of Galiano Island. Slate (BCX1210) is one of our frequently spotted whales in the Salish Sea - we are so happy to see that she has a new calf, and that the calf appears to be in great health! While we do typically ID Humpbacks based off of their fluke patterns (the underside of their tails), Slate has a very uniquely hooked dorsal that makes her a bit easier to ID from a distance compared to other Humpbacks. We still do not have a fluke photo for this calf - if you are able to get a clear photo of its fluke and would like to contribute to the Keta Coastal Conservation Humpback Identification catalogue, please visit www.ketacoastalconservation.org and submit your photo. Keta also has a free catalogue you can use to try and match up flukes of other known Humpbacks on your own!
Here are our best photos from the trip by Marine Naturalist Rebeka Pirker. We are currently booking tours daily leaving at 12pm from Nanaimo - book with us today to experience your own whale watching adventure!
