July 10th - A lone humpback by Thrasher Rock
On July 10th we set out in search for whales on our semi-covered boat Kula. We found what we wanted near Thrasher Rock! The lone humpback was feeding by taking long, deep dives. A humpbacks diet mainly consists of krill, shrimp and herring. One method a humpback whale uses to feed is called lunge feeding. This occurs when the whale takes a huge gulp of water in an inverted position where the prey is then filtered through their baleen teeth. Humpbacks can eat up to 2500 kg per day! We spent an hour watching this beautiful whale feed in the Strait of Georgia.
The Salish Sea is an ideal destination for them to eat as much as they can before they migrate back to warmer waters. Humpbacks are known to travel long distances; some of them can travel up to 8000 km per year! The whales that we are seeing are known for spending their winters in Mexico or Hawaii and then their summers in Washington and BC.
Unfortunately due to technical difficulties, our staff was unable to take any pictures on this awesome trip.
