September 24th - Fantastic day with Humpbacks

Topday we had a great trip with two beautiful humpbacks, Nike (KEX0003) a large male well known to us, and little Valiant, the 2017 calf of Split Fluke (BCX1068).

We found Nike and Valiant hanging out East of Valdes Island in the Strait of Georgia. Valiant was eagerly following Nike around, staying very close to him. Valiant is only 2 years old, so this is only their second solo summer. Spending time with older whales is a great way to learn as they continue growing. Humpbacks reach maturity between 4 and 10 years old, so little Valiant still has a few more years of being a kid.

These whales seemed very excited about something, as they were surfacing very frequently, fluking with every dive, and Valiant even treated everyone to a beautiful breach. We can only guess as to why these whales were so happy, but it definitely made for an incredible trip.

Our naturalists Rebeka and Val were able to capture some beautiful photos through the tour of these whales. Take a look at the best of the best below.
