May 24th 3:30 PM - There she blows!

On our adventure on the afternoon of the 24th our boat travelled south through the gulf islands looking for elusive whales. They checked all the hot spots, touring south through Trincomali Channel and out through Porlier Pass into the Strait of Georgia where they did a big loop. With no luck yet, they continued the search, heading further south towards Active Pass. As they travelled through Active pass and back into the gulf islands, they spotted a blow! They waited and watched, fingers crossed, but sadly the whale had vanished. After waiting they decided to try their luck elsewhere and continued north, slowly heading back towards Nanaimo while scanning the water, still hopeful.
They travelled up through Dodd Narrows and got word of a humpback near Snake Island. They went to investigate, hoping they had caught a break, but sadly that whale too had vanished. We think these blows may have belonged to Grey whales, who are known for doing very long dives and are tricky to spot due to their lack of dorsal fin and their shallow surfacing.
With no luck finding out humpback we returned to harbour. Viewing wildlife can be very exciting, but because they are truly wild animals, it can make it tricky to find them, and sometimes they just don’t want to be found. Our guests all received vouchers for a free trip, as we do love being able to show our guests our beautiful whales. These vouchers never expire, and we hope to see our guests again for another chance at finding the whales.

Please enjoy the photos of bald eagles, Pacific harbour seals, and a rather plump-looking male Steller sea lion taken by marine naturalist Cheyenne Brewster.
