September 8th - Humpback soup in the Salish Sea!
Everyone loves some soup on a chill fall day, but our soup is a bit different. We love some Humpback Soup in September! Humpback Soup is what we call days where we end up with tons of whales. On this day in particular our Humpback soup was made up of 11 different whales!
Typically when you find yourself in Humpback soup you’re with 2-4 whales, and you can see many more surrounding you in the distance. Humpbacks communicate through many sounds, a lot of which are low rumbles that can be heard from quite a distance. Which means even though Humpbacks may look far away from each other to our eyes, to them they are close enough to talk to.
Our distinct groups today were Lucky, Fader, Big Mamma and Split fin. There were 2 smaller groups around consisting of one lone individual and a pair.
In the afternoon we also hung out with Anvil, Delta and Corona plus another group of 4 whales were spotted in the distance.
As we enter the fall and our Humpbacks get ready to head to the breeding grounds we are starting to see some of our Northern Whales, like Big Mamma, moving into our region before they head out to the sea in a few weeks.
