July 9th 3:30 - So many Humpbacks!

Woah… we found so many humpbacks on this trip! While we counted 8 individuals near us, there were quite a few surfacing way off in the distance as well. The waters were mirror-like (extremely flat and calm) during our afternoon trip so you could see almost all the way over to Vancouver from Gabriola!

Here are the humpbacks we have confirmed IDs for so far for this trip:

  • Europa (BCX0854) and calf

  • Scoop (BCX0870) and calf

  • Cirque (MMY0180) and calf

So many moms and babies during this trip! It’s always wonderful to get to spot these pairs because we used to think Humpbacks were extirpated (locally extinct) from our coast.

During our evening tour our humpbacks were being quite eluvise. Even though we could see them all around us, they were doing deep dives - likely going after a large ball of krill or small schooling fish such as pollock or herring.

All photos from this our were taken by Naturalists Ryan and Cheyenne.
