May 8th - An afternoon with Hammer
On May 8th, we set out in search of whales on our open boat Cascadia. During our search for whales, we first found some Steller sea lions and a bald eagle hunting! Eagle’s have excellent eyesight and can see about 4-3 times further away than humans can. When searching for aquatic prey, eagles will perch on trees and look until something catches their eye. When they spot their prey, they use their talons to catch their prey. Eagle talons are razor sharp and super strong to sink in their prey and carry it away.
We found a humpback called Hammer at Stuart Channel after searching for a while. Hammer has been in this area since last week and they were feeding in this area again. Hammer was very active this afternoon as they were doing tail lobs, backwards tail slapping and rolling. Check out some of the pictures our naturalist Cheyenne Brewster below:
