November 6th - Humpback whales Outside Active Pass!

It was a moody day as the left the harbour on November 6th but we didn't let that bring down the mood! We headed out on search of whales and ended up down south near Active Pass when we found them! But, before getting to the whales we came across an amazing rainbow that stretched across the sky and was super vibrant! The photos hardly do it justice.

The whales that we found outside of active were Divot, her calf, and Papillon! These three were travelling slowly together doing brief dives and spending lots of time at the surface. At one point they even came by to check out the boat! Divot’s calf was also being playful and giving us some rolls at the surface and showing off their tail and pectoral fins!

After spending some time with these whales we headed back into the Southern gulf islands and started to head home. Before we got far we spotted another blow in the distance! This turned out to be one of our favourite whales: Anvil! She is an amazing whale to see because she is a Z type whale. This means that she has a striking white underside to her tail fluke. Lucky for us this also makes her super easy to ID! Today she was on a mission doing fast surfaces and movement so we left her to it and continued back to the harbour. We also stopped to see the sea lions at Harmac who are always a blast!

Overall it was an amazing day filled with lots of whales and other great sights! More of the photos from the day taken by naturalist Beka Pirker are below.
