October 22nd - 6 Humpbacks in the Strait of Georgia!
It was another exciting day as we left the harbour in search of some whales on the 22nd. Although the day was cloudy, the waters were calm and we very quickly found our first group of whales! It was mother calf pair BCX1057 Divot and her calf travelling with a new whale for us MMX0200 Exclamation!
Looking at the tail flukes of both of these whales it is pretty clear what they are named for. The trailing edge of Divot’s tail shows a big divot missing from it on the far right side. Exclamation on the other hand is named for a scar on their fluke which used to look like an exclamation mark, but since has a new scar beside it which makes it seem more like the lambda symbol. Seeing Exclamation up near Nanaimo was pretty interesting as just 4 days before our sighting they were seen off of Sooke! Although it’s common to see the humpbacks travelling throughout the Salish Sea, this is the time of year where some start to migrate south for the winter so having them come north instead of south is a little strange.
These three seemed to be sleeping when we first found them since they were doing slow movement and not showing their tail flukes off much but then they woke up and got more active! The calf was swimming around on their side showing off his tail flukes to us and it made for quite the show!
After watching this group we continued our journey south seeing what else we might find and came across another group of three humpbacks! This time it was mother and calf pair Sherwina, calf, and Nike travelling together! These guys were also moving slowly through the water but showing us their tail flukes so we could figure out who it was! After spending some time with these three we continued the trip and found some seals, sea lions, Eagles, and other wildlife. It was an amazing trip! Check out all the great photos taken from the day below.
