September 29th - Six humpback whales in the Strait!
Cascadia and Kula set off at 12pm from downtown Nanaimo to search for whales in the Salish Sea and boy did they find whales! It was a bit breezy to start, but that didn’t stop our crew from spotting spout after spout on the horzion. Humpback whales were everywhere!
Each boat saw 6 humpback whales split into 3 groups. One of the more active pairings was “Raptor” and her new calf “Harpy”. These two have been seen a lot all fall so we’ve been able to watch the calf get bigger and smarter as it spends time with mom. We were fortunate enough to see a whale wave its pectoral fin in the air, its tail in the air, and even throw the bottom half of its body out of the water in what we call a cartwheel!
After spending over an hour with different whales in the Strait of Georgia, we headed back into the islands to look for eagles, seals, and sea lions. The fall is a great time to see both Steller and California sea lions!
Here are some of the best photos taken on the tours by marine naturalist Rebeka Pirker.
