September 22nd - A day with Zigzag, Divot and Strike

September 22nd was a cloudy and calm day. We headed out on our semi-covered boat, Kula in search of whales and we found Zigzag near Valdes Island! Zigzag was doing lots of deep dives and flukes. After hanging with Zigzag for a while we found Divot and Strike near Galiano Island. We stuck with them for a little while since they weren’t that active and we found Zigzag again who was travelling south.

Along our trip we ran into some Southern Resident Killer Whales. As soon as we recognized them as Southern Resident Killer Whales, we left them in search of other whales. We don’t actively seek them out or watch them since they are endangered as there are only 75 of them left in the wild. Our company policy is to not watch Southern Resident Killer Whales and our practise became law in Canada last year. The Southern Residents need quiet waters to communicate with one another and to hunt Chinook salmon.

Check out some of the great pictures our naturalist Val Watson took below!
