Aug 16 - T18's at Apex, and Fallen Knight near Sechelt!

What an adventurous day! The sea was perfect as we travelled across the Strait to visit Fallen Knight (BCX0915) the humpback near Sechelt. Fallen Knight is one of our most easily recognizable whales in the area - the right side of her fluke curves inwards instead of lying flat. It is unclear why this is, it may have been a birth defect or it may be an older injury. Either way, we know her quirky tail doesn’t slow her down! This lovely lady was spotted with a calf last year!

After watching Fallen Knight forage for food, we caught word of Orca sighted to the South in an area known as Apex (where the Canadian and American borders meet). We had an amazing encounter with the T18’s as they porpoised and hunted. Matriarch Esperanza (T18) was spotted proudly carrying around her catch (a harbour porpoise) in her mouth for most of our trip! Big male Galiano (T19B) was seen rolling and porpoising as they actively hunted more food.

Below are photos from the trip by naturalists Val and Rebeka!
