August 5th - An afternoon with Zig Zag and tons of other wildlife!
All three vessels set off the dock at 1pm on August 5th and went searching for flukes and fins. Every day whale watching is fresh start from the day before so the vessels dispersed to cover as much ocean as possible.
After about an hour and a half of searching it was marine naturalist Rebeka Pirker who spotted a humpback whale off in the distance! Off of the shores of Galiano Island was a well-loved humpback whale named “Zig-Zag” (BCX1193). She had a calf in the winter of the 2018/2019 season, so all last summer we got to watch her teach little “Scuba” the ways of the Salish Sea. This year she is traveling solo and we watched her milling and showing off her giant fluke.
We also stopped to see harbour seals and their pups, stellar sea lions, cormorants, a bald eagle, a turkey vulture, and baby seagulls! Here are some of the best photos from the day.
