July 28th - A lone gentle giant in the Strait of Georgia

On July 28th we set out in search of whales. We searched far and wide for whales by first heading up to Lantzville, then all the way to Howe Sound. We found a humpback in the Strait of Georgia near Porlier Pass who we identified to be BCX1057, also known as “Divot”. The humpback whale was doing deep dives and flukes. Humpbacks like to travel here in the summer since the colder waters of BC are rich in prey, such as krill and herring. The majority of the humpbacks that travel here arrive from Hawaii. Humpbacks go to warmer waters as their breeding grounds which may be to avoid killer whale attacks on their young.
