June 26th - Humpback whales at Porlier Pass!

Our maiden voyage on our new semi-covered boat “Kula” was a massive success! We found two humpback whales east of Porlier Pass and were lucky enough to see a breach. A breach is when a whale propels at least 2/3rds of its body out of the water and lands on its side. It’s quite the display of power and shows off the immensity of these ocean giants.

After watching those two whales travel and go on deep dives, we found another individual humpback whale in the vicinity. This whale’s dorsal has a distinguishable white scar which helped us figure out that this is “Snoopy” BCY0770. Unfortunately we didn’t get a photograph of the whale’s fluke which usually makes it even easier to identify, but if you head over to www.ketacoastalconservation.org there is a free catalogue full of flukes identifying individuals that frequent the Salish Sea!

We also saw a large group of Steller sea lions hanging out on a buoy, fighting over space and napping on each other. These girls are always fun to watch! These photos were taken by marine naturalist Ryan Uslu.

If you’re interested in joining us for a tour we are now running everyday at 1pm on both our open boats and semi-covered vessel. If you’ve already joined us and would like to come again, returning guests get a 15% discount!
