September 19th - Orcas in Howe Sound
On September 19th we began crossing the Straight of Georgia in search of whales. We ended up in the mouth of Howe Sound, where we located two different pods of Orca: The T100’s and the T123’s. We spent most of our visit with the T123’s as the T100’s raced ahead, likely in search of their next meal! The T123 pod consists of four whales: Matriarch T123 (Sidney), and her children T123A (Stanley), T123C (Lucky), and T123D (Darcy).
We also had our second encounter with a humpback whale we have nicknamed Mr. Random Spot. We first spotted him on September 16th, but he has continued to elude us as we have been unable to identify him! We visited this humpback very briefly as he was doing long dives (around 8 minutes each), but we did manage to see him fluke twice!
