August 25th - Bigg's (Transient) Orcas All Day Long

On the 25th we were lucky enough to see the T036A’s travelling and hunting in presidents channel all the way down south in the San Juan Islands! They spent the day circling around Waldron Island, hunting, travelling, and maybe even sleeping! It can be hard to see when an orca is sleeping because they dont do it like we do. Since they don’t do automatic breathing like us and have to actually think about when to take a breath they can only shut down half their brain at a time. When we see them sleeping you would hardly be able to tell the difference between it and travel, other than they surface and swim a little slower than usual.

We not only got to see the orca in a very important part of their day but since the water was so nice and calm the guests got some really good looks at the seabirds they were sharing the water with as well! Below are some of the best pictures captured by our naturalists for the day.
